Nigerian army reports killing 76 militants in Borno State offensive

The Nigerian military has announced the elimination of 76 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants in northeastern Borno state over recent weeks.

Both groups have been at the forefront of a brutal insurgency in the region since 2009, leading to the deaths of thousands and the displacement of millions, with Borno as the conflict’s epicenter.

The militants have intensified their assaults in Borno this year, including a deadly attack on the Dumba community last Sunday, which claimed the lives of at least 40 farmers.

According to Major-General Edward Buba, a military spokesperson, troops conducted operations across Damboa, Bama, and Chibok between January 7 and 13, killing 24 militants. However, no information was provided regarding potential troop casualties.

During these operations, the military apprehended 72 suspects, rescued eight hostages, and seized a cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, grenades, rocket-propelled grenades, and improvised explosive devices.
