At least five Cameroonian soldiers were killed and several others wounded in an attack by gunmen from Nigeria in the village of Bakinjaw, located on the Cameroon-Nigeria border, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The assault, which occurred early on Friday, involved hundreds of armed Fulani herders crossing from Taraba state in Nigeria to target a military post, according to Aka Martin Tyoga, a member of parliament for Akwaya district, where the incident occurred.
Tyoga suggested the attack was in retaliation for the deaths of several herders the previous day at the hands of Cameroonian soldiers. Agwa Linus, the traditional leader of Bakinjaw, confirmed that the attackers also set his home on fire.
“This is not the first time they’ve attacked, and it’s deeply troubling,” he remarked.
This attack is part of a wider pattern of efforts to seize territory in the border region.
