Nigerian MP Alex Ikwechegh has publicly apologized following the circulation of a video in which he is seen slapping and verbally confronting a taxi driver who had arrived at his residence in Abuja to deliver food.
In a statement, Ikwechegh acknowledged the incident as “a humbling reminder of the need for restraint and self-control,” expressing regret for his behavior and recognizing his responsibility as a public servant. The politician, who was questioned by police on Sunday, admitted that his actions and words could have a significant impact on others.
The altercation arose when Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya delivered an order of snails to Ikwechegh’s home and requested that the MP collect the delivery personally. This sparked a dispute, during which Ikwechegh accused Abuwatseya of disrespect and struck him in a video that quickly went viral.
In the footage, Ikwechegh can be heard calling the driver a “stupid idiot” and warning him of his influence. He also reportedly threatened further action against the driver. The situation escalated when Abuwatseya disclosed that he was recording, prompting Ikwechegh to allegedly seize the driver’s phone and continue his tirade.
The MP issued a subsequent apology to the Inspector General of Police, acknowledging that his remarks might have unintentionally disrespected the office. The Nigerian House of Representatives has referred the incident to its ethics committee for further review.
According to Ikwechegh, he and Abuwatseya have since pursued alternative means of resolving their dispute and have reached a “respectful resolution.” The politician vowed to use the experience as an opportunity for personal growth, aspiring to serve as a more empathetic representative for his constituents.
