An investigation by Nigeria’s human rights commission has concluded that there is no evidence to support claims that the Nigerian military deliberately targeted women and children or conducted covert abortion operations during its fight against Islamist insurgents in the northeast.
The inquiry was prompted by a December 2022 Reuters report alleging that the military had conducted a secret and illegal abortion program and engaged in the killing of children in the region, which has been afflicted by a 15-year-long insurgency.
The Nigerian military has consistently denied these allegations, and the commission’s investigation found no proof to substantiate the claims made in the report.
