Nigerian town celebrates after killing ‘killer hippo’

In Yauri, a town in northwestern Nigeria’s Kebbi state, local rice farmers and fishermen are celebrating after successfully hunting and killing a feared hippo and its calf.

The hunt, which lasted several weeks, was launched after the animal killed a fisherman and injured another, causing widespread fear among the community.

The Kebbi state government authorized the hunt to ensure the safety of those living near the River Niger.

The hippo, whose population in Nigeria has dwindled to around 100, was killed using locally made spears. Afterward, the carcass was brought to the palace of a high-ranking administrator, where its meat was distributed to locals.

Many residents, like Sani Yauri, expressed relief, saying the hippo had kept farmers and fishermen from their work due to its frequent attacks.

While the community celebrated, reactions on social media were mixed. Some praised the townspeople for taking action, while others, including animal rights activists, condemned the killing of the endangered species.

Conservationists stressed the need for better awareness and alternatives to protect both people and animals in rural communities.
