Nigeria’s army chief Lagbaja succumbs to illness

Nigeria’s Army Chief, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has passed away at the age of 56, President Bola Tinubu confirmed on Wednesday.

Lagbaja died on Tuesday night in Lagos, following a period of illness, according to a statement from the president’s office.

Lagbaja, who assumed office in June 2023, was instrumental in leading Nigeria’s military forces during a crucial phase of the ongoing battle against Islamic extremists in the northeast.

His leadership came at a time when Boko Haram and its affiliates have continued to wage insurgency in the region for nearly 15 years.

The army chief had not been seen in public for nearly two months, sparking speculation about his health.

Despite initial denials, the army confirmed his death following the announcement from Tinubu. Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede has since been appointed as the acting army chief.

His death marks the second time in less than four years that a Nigerian army chief has died in office. In 2021, Ibrahim Attahiru, the previous army chief, died in a military plane crash after just four months in office.

During Lagbaja’s tenure, the Nigerian military continued to struggle with the expansion of extremist groups in the Lake Chad Basin region.

Though the frequency of attacks has decreased, analysts warn that militants have been consolidating power and recruiting new fighters.

Throughout his career, Lagbaja focused on instilling discipline and professionalism within the military.

His efforts to rebuild the army’s reputation were key priorities. Nigeria’s Defense Chief, Gen. Christopher Musa, described his death as a “tremendous loss,” praising Lagbaja’s courage and commitment to national security.
