Opposition in Tanzania picks new leader amid political turmoil

Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, has appointed Tundu Lissu as its new leader ahead of October’s elections.

Freeman Mbowe, who led Chadema for over two decades, congratulated Lissu on Wednesday.

The leadership change comes amid rising political repression and internal divisions within the party.

Lissu, the party’s 2020 presidential candidate, criticized Mbowe’s long tenure and promised reform.

Meanwhile, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of the ruling CCM party has already been nominated as candidate.

Lissu warned of disrupting the election unless electoral reforms are made. Chadema has yet to announce its presidential candidate.
