Over 100 feared dead in Nigeria boat disaster

More than 100 people are feared dead after a boat carrying mostly women and children capsized in Nigeria.

Rescue workers continued to recover bodies from the River Niger on Thursday.

The boat, with around 300 passengers, was traveling to a Mawlid celebration in Niger State when the accident occurred Tuesday night.

The state’s emergency agency reported that 36 bodies have been found so far, and 150 survivors rescued.

“We have recovered 20 more bodies today,” said agency spokesman Ibrahim Audu Husseini.

He confirmed that there was “no possibility” of finding more survivors.

The cause of the sinking, which occurred near Gbajibo community at 8:30 pm, remains unclear.

However, boat accidents are common on Nigeria’s unregulated waterways, especially during the rainy season.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed sympathy for the victims and called for an investigation into the incident.

He urged authorities to enforce regulations banning night travel on rivers and punish operators who violate the rules.

Last month, over 40 people died in a similar boat accident in Zamfara State, highlighting the ongoing dangers on Nigeria’s waterways.
