IOM: Over 250,000 flee Sudan’s El Gezira amid clashes

A large-scale displacement crisis has gripped Sudan’s El Gezira state as an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 people have fled their homes since December 15th. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) attributed this exodus to escalating clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), armed group with a long-standing conflict with the military.

The RSF, engaged in an eight-month-long power struggle with the army, has intensified its offensive in El Gezira. Witnesses reported RSF fighters entering the state capital, Wad Madani, on Monday, raising concerns about further escalation and potential civilian casualties.

The IOM’s report paints a grim picture of the humanitarian situation in El Gezira. Displaced residents are reportedly seeking refuge in neighboring towns and villages, placing immense strain on local resources. Many are arriving with limited belongings and facing critical shortages of food, water, and medical supplies.

The ongoing conflict has disrupted agricultural activities in El Gezira, a vital breadbasket region for Sudan. The mass displacement of farmers is likely to exacerbate food insecurity in the coming months, adding another layer of hardship to the already dire humanitarian situation.

International organizations are calling for immediate action to address the displacement crisis and prevent further human suffering. The IOM urges the Sudanese authorities to ensure safe passage for humanitarian aid and establish secure zones for displaced civilians.

The international community is also urged to provide emergency assistance to meet the immediate needs of the displaced population and support long-term recovery efforts.

The conflict in El Gezira, fueled by political instability and simmering tensions between the military and the RSF, threatens to destabilize Sudan further. A swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict is crucial to prevent further displacement and ensure the safety and well-being of civilians in El Gezira and across Sudan.
