Over 43,000 cholera cases reported in war-torn Sudan

Sudan’s Health Ministry reported Thursday that over 43,000 cholera cases and 1,800 deaths have gripped the war-torn nation.

The ministry confirmed 221 new cholera cases across eight states, with two fatalities, bringing the total to 43,490 cases and 1,187 deaths.

The hardest-hit areas include Khartoum, Al Jazirah, Al Qadarif, Kassala, Nile River, Northern State, White Nile, and Sennar.

In addition to cholera, Sudan is battling a dengue fever outbreak, with 15 new cases pushing the total infections to 8,008 and 16 fatalities.

Dengue fever, spread by mosquitoes, causes high fever, headaches, muscle pain, and vomiting, worsening the nation’s health crisis.

Cholera, a bacterial disease spread through contaminated water, leads to severe dehydration and can be deadly if untreated.

Sudan has been mired in conflict since April 2023, with fierce clashes amid General army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The ongoing violence has killed over 20,000 people and displaced more than 14 million, exacerbating the country’s humanitarian crisis.

International organizations have expressed alarm, urging immediate action to curb the spread of disease amid the devastation.

Access to clean water, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid remains critical as Sudan grapples with mounting health emergencies.
