Parliament deadlock puts Ghana at risk of shutdown

Ghana faces a possible government shutdown if Parliament fails to pass a provisional budget before Dec. 7 elections.

Traditionally approved in November during election years, the budget ensures funding until the president-elect takes office.

Parliament has been stalled since October due to disputes over majority control, with Speaker Alban Bagbin refusing to recall sessions.

Former Finance Minister Seth Terkper warned that lean spending could affect salaries, interest payments, and the presidential transition.

Labour unions are pressing for action, fearing salary disruptions in January.

A shutdown would be Ghana’s first in over 30 years, raising serious economic concerns.
