Malawi is grappling with a nationwide blackout that began Wednesday, impacting public hospitals across the country.
The state-run Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has been unable to provide power to its 20 million citizens since early Wednesday.
Energy Minister Ibrahim Matola told Anadolu that the government, in collaboration with ESCOM, is actively working to resolve the issue.
Matola described the situation as having “thrown the country into total darkness,” emphasizing the urgency of the response.
“We are working to ensure power is restored by the end of the day,” Matola said.
He also stated that an investigation into the cause of the blackout is underway.
John Kapito, head of the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA), expressed concern over the blackout’s impact on health services.
Kapito urged the government to address the issue swiftly to prevent potential loss of lives.
“We cannot continue like this,” he warned, highlighting the critical need for a quick resolution.
