Large swathes of Ethiopia are grappling with a significant electricity blackout, according to the country’s state-run power company, citing “issues in our system” as the cause.
Ethiopian Electric Power refrained from specifying the exact nature of these issues but indicated in a Facebook post that investigations are underway to determine the root cause of the outage.
With the exception of Bahir Dar, situated in the north-west along with its surrounding vicinity, all other regions of the country have been affected by the power disruption, which commenced at approximately 15:40 local time (12:40 GMT).
In a separate communication, the company announced that efforts to restore power have commenced in the capital, Addis Ababa, and some other areas, several hours following the onset of the problem.
