President Hassan named as CCM candidate for October elections

Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party has named President Samia Suluhu Hassan as its candidate for October’s elections.

Hassan, who took office in 2021 after John Magufuli’s death, was initially praised for easing restrictions on opposition and media.

However, rights groups now criticize her administration for renewed repression, including opposition arrests and political violence.

“We achieved much, and I promise to deliver more,” Hassan said, urging unity ahead of the elections.

Opposition leader Dorothy Semu has announced her candidacy, while the Chadema party, yet to choose its candidate, has threatened a boycott over stalled electoral reforms.

The upcoming elections will test Tanzania’s political unity and democratic progress.
