Public outrage leads to life sentences for Tanzanian rapists

A Tanzanian court in Dodoma has sentenced four men, including a soldier and a prison officer, to life imprisonment for gang rape.

The case involved the indecent assault of a young woman from Dar es Salaam, drawing significant public attention.

The convicted men are Clinton Damas Nyundo, a soldier in the Tanzania People’s Defense Force, and Praygod Mushi, a prison officer.

Nickson Jackson and Amin Lema were also found guilty of the heinous crime.

The trial at the Dodoma Resident Magistrate’s Court was conducted privately, with the prosecution presenting 18 witnesses and 12 exhibits.

The infamous case has been referred to as “Waliotumwa na Afande,” meaning “Sent by the Officer,” due to allegations of police involvement.

The defendants were charged after their first court appearance on August 19, 2024.

In addition to life sentences, each man was ordered to pay Sh1 million, equivalent to $367, in compensation to the victim.

This case received national attention when a video of the assault went viral in early August, igniting outrage throughout Tanzania.

Public anger escalated following controversial remarks from Dodoma’s police commander, suggesting the victim was involved in the sex trade.
