South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Wednesday that the country has lodged a referral to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding Israel’s government actions in the Gaza conflict.
“As South Africa we have accordingly, together with many other countries in the world, saw fit to refer this whole Israeli government action to the International Criminal Court. We have put through a referral because we believe that war crimes are being committed there,” President Ramaphosa said.
He refrained from revealing the identities of the other nations involved in the referral of Israel to the ICC.
He stated their non-endorsement of the Hamas’s previous attack on Israel but expressed opposition to Israel’s current actions, suggesting that these actions should be investigated by the ICC.
The ICC functions as a global court responsible for probing and prosecuting individuals accused of committing serious crimes that impact the global community, including war crimes and genocides.
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinians, South Africa has been notably outspoken in its support for the Palestinian cause.
Numerous leaders within the country have openly voiced their support for the Palestinians, and there have been various demonstrations advocating for the Palestinian cause as well.
