Fourteen people are missing after a boat capsized on Lake Chamo in southern Ethiopia, officials reported on Friday.
The boat, carrying bananas, sank on Thursday in the lake located south of Addis Ababa. The communications office for the Gamo zone confirmed the incident.
Rescuers managed to recover two survivors who survived by clinging to jerrycans. Authorities stated that a search operation is ongoing for the remaining passengers.
Fifteen workers who were unloading the bananas and one operator were on board the boat, according to local police commander Reta Tekla.
The cause of the boat’s sinking remains unknown. Investigations are underway to determine the factors that led to the accident.
Lake Chamo, situated in the Great Rift Valley, reaches a maximum depth of 14 meters. The lake is known to be inhabited by crocodiles and hippopotamuses.
