Russian bombers land in South Africa

South Africa announced Tuesday it is hosting Russia’s Aerospace Forces for a five-day visit to strengthen military ties.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) welcomed the Russian Aerospace Forces as they landed at Air Force Base Waterkloof, marking a significant moment in defense cooperation.

The SANDF statement confirmed Russian military aircraft, including the IL-62, AN-124, and Tupolev Tu-160 bombers, are part of the display, landing in Africa for the first time.

As part of the visit, the two military organizations will conduct a bilateral seminar, focusing on combat planning, strategy, and search and rescue operations.

According to SANDF, this visit offers valuable knowledge and exposure to advanced Russian air assets, enhancing South Africa’s military capabilities.

This collaboration follows a 1995 defense agreement, allowing Russia’s Aerospace Forces to visit South Africa periodically, reaffirming diplomatic and military ties between the two nations.
