Rwanda-backed M23 hands over 20 Hutu rebels to Kigali

The Rwanda-backed M23 militia in the DRC announced the handover of 20 fighters from the Hutu militia, FDLR, to Rwanda.

The FDLR is linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide, and Rwanda has used their presence in the DRC to justify supporting M23.

The handover took place at the border between Goma and Gisenyi.

Among those transferred were General Ezechiel Gakwere, implicated in the genocide, and Major Gilbert Ndayambaje, sentenced to life for crimes against humanity.

M23’s deputy spokesperson, Oscar Balinda, confirmed the transfer of 20 soldiers and stated that efforts to capture more in Goma are ongoing.

Rwandan officers searched the suspects and promised justice for any involved in the genocide.

Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe criticized the international community for ignoring Rwanda’s warnings about the FDLR, suggesting that the West viewed the situation as a pretext for Rwanda’s alleged mineral interests in the DRC.
