Rwanda extends refugee deal with AU and UNHCR

Rwanda, the African Union Commission, and the UN refugee agency have extended their agreement to support African refugees stranded in Libya.

The extension will last until December 31, 2025.

The 2019 memorandum of understanding was renewed to emphasize protection and durable solutions for refugees and asylum seekers from Libya.

Over 2,300 individuals from various African nations have been evacuated under this agreement.

Since the MOU’s inception, about 1,800 refugees have been resettled in third countries.

Rwanda had initially committed to accepting up to 30,000 refugees from Libya when the agreement was first announced.

The UNHCR will continue to offer essential services, including shelter, food, and healthcare, to evacuees in Rwanda.

This support aims to ensure their well-being during their stay.

Libya’s situation remains unstable due to ongoing conflict and political divisions.

The UN has recently raised concerns about the worsening economic and security conditions in the country.
