S Africa investigates alleged use of AI chatbot in Ramaphosa’s speech

An inquiry has been launched by the South African presidency following reports that sections of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent speech might have been crafted with the assistance of an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot called ChatGPT, local media reported.

Speculation emerged online suggesting that a portion of the speech delivered at an education forum last week might not have originated from the president or his team of speechwriters.

Vincent Magwenya, the president’s spokesperson, refuted these claims, asserting that AI tools are not employed for generating content like speeches within their operations.

He clarified that certain segments of the speech were provided by the education department to the president’s office, promising an investigation into the origins of the content.

Mr. Magwenya emphasized, “The use of AI to produce speeches or any other material is unacceptable, and action will be taken should these reports prove to be correct,” as reported by The South African news outlet.
