S Africa warns citizens fighting for Israel of potential prosecution

South African citizens fighting for Israel in Gaza have been cautioned by their government that they could face prosecution if they engage in such activities.

The South African foreign ministry expressed deep concern over reports indicating the involvement of some of its nationals in joining the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) for combat in Gaza or contemplating such actions.

The ministry highlighted that such involvement might lead to breaches of international law and potentially result in the perpetrators being legally pursued in South Africa.

While the exact number of South Africans involved was not specified, the government previously stated that the State Security Agency (SSA) was actively tracking down individuals engaged in these activities.

According to the ministry, South Africans require prior government authorization to participate legally in conflicts in Israel. Moreover, it was emphasized that naturalized citizens involved in such conflicts risk losing their South African nationality, considering the country’s stance of non-support for the war in which they are participating.

The conflict in Gaza began when the region’s rulers, Hamas, launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7. The casualties on both sides have been significant, with official Israeli figures indicating around 1,140 deaths, primarily civilians, and 250 abductions.

However, Gaza’s health ministry reports a much higher toll, stating that over 19,400 people, predominantly women and children, have been killed by Israel’s military response, leading to vast destruction in the region.

South Africa has historically been a staunch advocate for the Palestinian cause, drawing parallels between their support and their own struggle against apartheid.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) has consistently condemned Israel’s actions, with the government recalling all diplomats from the country.

On Monday, Ramaphosa denounced the “genocidal onslaught and slaughter of the people of Palestine” at a press conference with representatives of pro-Palestinian groups in Johannesburg.
