S. African minister, entourage robbed in absurd incident

South African police on Tuesday reported that a government minister was the victim of a robbery, during which her bodyguards had their firearms stolen. Authorities in the crime-plagued country termed this event as an “unprecedented incident.”

The incident occurred on Monday while Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga was traveling on a highway south of Johannesburg, as confirmed by the police.

“Personal belongings and two SAPS (South African Police Service) service pistols were stolen,” said police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe.

“A manhunt has since been launched following this unprecedented incident and to bring to book those responsible.”

According to local media reports, the minister’s vehicle had come to a halt for a tire change when the robbery took place.

Involving a high-profile official accompanied by an armed security detail, this incident stands out, even by South African standards.

This country has maintained a notorious reputation for violent crime and is frequently characterized as one of the most perilous places in the world, excluding active war zones.

Critics have alleged that authorities have fallen short in guaranteeing the safety of citizens and delivering justice for victims of crime.

“The SAPS is committed to executing its mandate of protecting the executive of the country and community at large,” said Mathe.

“VIP protection is one of the key priority areas for the SAPS and has been undertaken with excellence over the years.”
