The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, is launching a web television platform following the closure of several French media outlets in the region.
This move aims to counter “disinformation campaigns” faced by the bloc, according to an official from Mali’s Department of Communication.
The web TV initiative marks a key moment as the AES commemorates its first anniversary since its formation.
The alliance, formed by the three junta-ruled nations, seeks to strengthen its credibility and control the narrative within its borders.
Mali’s President, Assimi Goita, announced the official launch of the platform during a recent speech.
Special adviser to Mali’s communication minister, Habib Traore, confirmed that all preparations are in place for the launch.
The decision follows months of discussions and a recent suspension of another French TV channel for violating media regulations.
Previously, France24 and RFI radio were permanently banned in 2022.
The AES was established in response to regional instability caused by militant groups and in defiance of the Economic Community of West African States, from which the three nations withdrew.
The platform is expected to provide a unified voice for the AES as it faces increasing challenges.
