Senegal will compensate families of those killed in political unrest

The Senegalese government has announced plans to provide financial compensation to families of those killed during political unrest between 2021 and 2024.

Families of the 79 individuals who lost their lives will receive $15,800, along with additional support for children and access to healthcare.

Over 2,000 individuals detained during this period will also receive a one-time payment.

The compensation package follows a period of significant political turmoil, sparked by opposition to former President Macky Sall’s bid for a third term in office.

The government has also pledged to repeal a controversial amnesty law passed during the Sall administration.

This move aims to address the legacy of political violence and promote reconciliation in Senegal, a country long considered a beacon of democratic stability in West Africa.
