Seven killed in Congo concert stampede

Seven people were killed and many others injured during a stampede at a music concert in Congo’s capital on Saturday, authorities said.

The incident took place at the 80,000-capacity Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa.

Popular Congolese gospel singer Mike Kalambayi was performing when the stampede occurred, said Kinshasa Governor Daniel Bumba.

State television RTNC confirmed the deaths and noted some injured were in intensive care.

Authorities have not commented on the cause, citing an ongoing investigation.

However, the local music management company stated the chaos began when security tried to neutralize troublemakers.

Approximately 30,000 people attended the concert, featuring several other musicians and pastors, according to Maajabu Gospel, the event’s management company.

Videos showed large crowds outside the stadium, waiting to enter.

Inside, people rushed toward the center stage. Congo has experienced similar tragedies due to poor crowd control.

Last October, eleven people died in a stampede at the same stadium during a music concert.
