Seven killed in Mogadishu floods after heavy rainfall

At least seven people, including two women, were killed in Mogadishu after severe rainfall caused flooding in the city’s two districts on Friday night, according to a government official.

Saleh Hassan, spokesperson for the mayor of Mogadishu, confirmed the fatalities, adding that the floods also collapsed nine houses and affected 200 families, whose homes were flooded.

The flood also damaged infrastructure, including six major roads, severely disrupting movement in Somalia’s capital.

Among the victims was a young boy whose body was retrieved from debris on one of the flooded streets. Local resident Nuradin Mohammed shared his distress, saying, “I was hoping the water would spit him out but all was in vain. This morning, my friends and I used hammers and spades to recover his body.”
