Despite the government lifting a curfew imposed following an attack on a military barracks, the streets of Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, were largely deserted early on Monday.
Security forces successfully repelled “renegade soldiers” who sought to breach a military arsenal in Freetown during the early hours of Sunday, as announced by the government.
Amidst these events, unidentified assailants also targeted a police station and facilitated the escape of inmates from a major prison on Sunday.
Tensions have escalated in Sierra Leone since President Julius Maada Bio’s re-election in June, a result disputed by the primary opposition candidate and questioned by international entities like the United States and the European Union.
In a national address on Sunday, President Bio urged the country’s political, traditional, and civil leaders to collaborate in maintaining peace.
He stated that most of the assailants involved in the barracks attack had been apprehended, with an ongoing investigation.
A government statement released encouraged citizens to resume their regular activities starting at 0600 GMT on Monday.
