Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi reaffirmed his country’s unwavering support for Libya’s sovereignty and stability during talks in Cairo with eastern commander Khalifa Haftar.
Sisi urged renewed efforts to block all foreign interference in Libya and called for the full withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries.
He stressed Egypt’s backing for political initiatives seeking a comprehensive settlement, including simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections meant to end years of division.
Haftar thanked Egypt for what he described as its pivotal role in supporting Libyan security and its steady assistance throughout the conflict.
The meeting came as the UN mission attempts to push Libya toward long-delayed elections to break the deadlock between rival administrations.
Libya remains split between a Tripoli-based government led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh and a Benghazi-based authority appointed by parliament under Osama Hammad.
Sisi and Haftar also reviewed regional developments, focusing on Sudan’s escalating crisis and its impact on neighbouring states.
Both sides agreed on the need to intensify diplomatic efforts to secure a peaceful settlement that protects Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Egypt and Libya warned that Sudan’s stability is vital to their own national security due to shared borders and intertwined regional dynamics.
Sudan has been gripped by a devastating conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, killing thousands and displacing millions.
