Six Nigerien soldiers and 10 suspected militants killed in clashes

Six Nigerien soldiers and ten “terrorists” lost their lives during clashes on Sunday in the western part of the country, authorities said.

On Sunday, suspected jihadists on motorcycles ambushed the troops close to the western town of Sanam, as detailed in a statement released by the National Guard High Command.

Sanam is situated within the Tillaberi tri-border area, where Niger shares borders with Mali and Burkina Faso. This region is known for its frequent occurrence of militant attacks.

The military regime, which assumed power after the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, reported that on August 9, five soldiers were slain in an assault within the same vicinity.

Coup leader General Abdourahamane Tiani has defended the removal of Bazoum by citing the “worsening security conditions” in the nation.
