Somali-Canadian rapper K’naan faces sexual assault charge, CBC says

Somali-Canadian rapper K’naan, best known for his hit song “Wavin’ Flag” which became an anthem during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, has been charged with sexual assault, according to a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). The charge relates to an alleged incident in Quebec City in July 2010, involving a woman who was in her twenties at the time.

Court documents reveal that a preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled for April 2025. K’naan, whose real name is Keinan Abdi Warsame, has expressed his wish to be tried in English before a jury, as noted by his legal representative.

This development comes shortly after K’naan was honored by the Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada for the global impact of “Wavin’ Flag,” which was chosen as Coca-Cola’s anthem for the 2010 World Cup.
