Somali forces kill several ISIS fighters in Puntland

Somali security forces have reported killing several Islamic State (IS) fighters and seizing eight militant outposts in Puntland.

The operation, which targeted the Cal Miskat mountains in the Bari region, aimed to eliminate IS militants active in the area.

The Puntland army confirmed that foreign fighters were among those killed in the military offensive.

Security forces gained control of key outposts, including one major stronghold in the mountainous region.

The operation continued as forces advanced toward other IS hideouts.

In a statement, the army disclosed that nine drones, loaded with explosives and aimed at the security forces, were shot down during the fighting.

This marks another strategic blow to IS as they face growing pressure from Somali military operations.

Military commanders on the ground reported intense clashes, particularly around caves used by militants to fortify their positions.

Despite the resistance, officials believe the forces are making significant progress in neutralizing IS militants in the region.

Experts note that IS remains a smaller threat in Somalia compared to Al-Shabaab, but their influence is growing.

Abdul Qadir Mumin, a Puntland native, is believed to lead IS in Somalia. He is considered a key figure in the global IS network.

The United Nations had previously warned of rising IS activity in Somalia and other parts of Africa, including Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Somali authorities remain committed to dismantling IS cells in the region.
