Somali president’s visit to Ethiopia renews diplomatic relations

Somalia and Ethiopia have announced the restoration of full diplomatic relations following a visit by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Addis Ababa.

The two countries had severed diplomatic ties last year following Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland, the breakaway region of Somalia. This agreement, which reportedly involved the recognition of Somaliland’s independence in exchange for port access and a military base, sparked outrage in Somalia.

However, a peace deal brokered by Turkey last month has eased tensions between the two nations. During President Mohamud’s visit, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the deal and emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations.

The two countries also discussed deepening trade and security cooperation to combat extremist militant groups.

While the restoration of diplomatic ties marks a significant step forward, several key issues remain unresolved, including the future of Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland and the modalities of Ethiopia’s access to the sea.

The tensions between Ethiopia and its neighbors have also led to the formation of new regional alliances. Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia have recently strengthened their ties, sharing concerns about Ethiopia’s growing influence in the region.

This development highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics in the Horn of Africa and the ongoing efforts to address regional security challenges and foster stability.
