Somalia executes 10 al-Shabaab insurgents in Puntland

Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland state executed 10 members of the Islamist militant group al-Shabaab on Saturday, according to a statement from the regional police.

The executions took place by firing squad in the town of Galkayo, located in the Mudug region, following a military court trial. The fighters were sentenced to death for their involvement in a series of assassinations and bombings across Galkayo.

“The executed fighters had previously been sentenced to death by the supreme court of the armed forces after being found guilty of committing murders in the city of Galkayo,” police officials stated.

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked insurgent group, has been waging a nearly two-decade-long campaign to overthrow Somalia’s central government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.
