Somaliland opposition leader Cirro wins and calls for unity

Somaliland opposition leader Abdirahman Cirro has won the presidential election, defeating incumbent Muse Bihi Abdi with 64% of the vote.

The Somaliland Electoral Commission confirmed the result on Tuesday, marking a shift in the region’s political landscape.

Cirro, leader of the Waddani party, urged unity after his victory, stating, “This election is about advancing the Somaliland nation.”

The breakaway region, which declared independence in 1991, remains unrecognized globally.

Somaliland hopes that Cirro’s win will lead to international recognition, especially after a recent deal with Ethiopia that could grant access to the coast.

Cirro’s supporters also expect the incoming U.S. administration to favor their cause.

While Cirro has backed the Ethiopia deal, his future stance on dialogue with Somalia remains unclear.

The election could signal closer ties with China, a key investor in the Horn of Africa.

Leaders from neighboring countries, including Somalia and Djibouti, have congratulated Cirro, raising hopes for improved diplomatic relations.

The transition from campaigning to governing will be crucial for Somaliland’s future.
