At least 11 people were killed and three others wounded after gunmen opened fire on guests at a house party in a township south of Durban, South African police said on Wednesday.
Three armed men attacked the gathering in KwaMakhutha, in KwaZulu-Natal province, on Tuesday night before fleeing the scene, prompting a police manhunt.
Police said a woman believed to be pregnant and 13 men were among those at the party.
Ten people, including the woman, were killed at the scene, while four others were taken to hospital. One of the injured later died from gunshot wounds, bringing the death toll to 11.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, although police said they could not rule out a dispute between rival groups.
Authorities also said some of the victims had previously come to the attention of crime intelligence over suspected illegal activities, but provided no further details.
Police are searching for the three gunmen and have appealed for information that could help identify or locate them.
South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime, with the country recording an average of about 60 murders a day.
Crime and public safety are also expected to remain prominent issues ahead of municipal elections scheduled for November.
