South Sudan confirms deaths of 16 Sudanese nationals in unrest

South Sudan’s police confirmed on Monday that 16 Sudanese nationals were killed during violent protests last week.

The unrest stemmed from allegations surrounding the deaths of South Sudanese civilians in Sudan’s El Jazira region.

The protests erupted in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, and spread to other parts of the country.

Demonstrators expressed outrage over the belief that Sudanese military forces, along with allied groups, were responsible for the killings.

Human rights groups have accused Sudan’s military and its allies of carrying out ethnically-targeted violence in El Jazira.

South Sudan’s national police reported that the 16 Sudanese victims were killed across four states.

Authorities vowed to intensify patrols in markets and residential areas to ensure the safety of Sudanese nationals living in the country.

To restore order, South Sudan’s government imposed a curfew that remains in effect from dusk to dawn.

The curfew was put in place on Friday in an effort to quell the rising tensions.

Meanwhile, South Sudan’s military announced the arrest of at least 24 individuals linked to the riots.

Authorities stated that charges would be filed once investigations into the unrest were completed.
