Southern Ethiopia struggles with widespread flooding

Heavy rains in southern Ethiopia have caused the Omo River to overflow, displacing approximately 79,000 people across 34 districts, according to local media reports on Tuesday.

Ato Tadele Hate, a local leader, revealed that persistent downpours devastated farmland and livestock, urging the federal government and aid organizations to provide immediate relief.

Hate noted the recurring nature of these floods, mentioning that last year’s heavy rains caused similar damage.

The current flooding has affected areas where residents were already relocated from previous floods.

He emphasized the urgency of implementing measures to divert the Omo River and prevent future overflows, citing the increased risk to nearby communities.

Omorate, a city on the riverbank, faces imminent danger from the rising waters.

Local Red Cross leader Tilahun Bishaw warned that if rains persist, the situation could worsen, making prompt action crucial.
