Students among killed in Egypt highway bus accident

A bus accident on a highway in Egypt claimed the lives of 12 people and injured 33 others on Monday, according to a statement from the country’s health ministry.

The incident occurred as the bus, which was transporting college students from Galala University, overturned on the highway. The crash took place in Egypt’s eastern Suez governorate, state-owned newspaper Akhbar al-Youm reported.

Authorities confirmed that no other vehicle was involved in the accident. Investigations are ongoing to determine the bus’s speed and the circumstances leading to the crash.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, and by Monday evening, 19 of them had been discharged, according to the health ministry’s statement.

Road accidents in Egypt are frequent due to drivers often ignoring traffic laws and poor road conditions in many areas. However, the Galala road, where the crash happened, is part of a newer infrastructure network. It is one of the thousands of kilometers of highways and overpasses built in the last decade as part of the government’s focus on infrastructure development.

In 2023, Egypt recorded over 5,600 road accident fatalities, highlighting the ongoing issue of road safety in the Arab world’s most populous nation.
