Sultan Haitham arrives in Algiers to strengthen regional ties

Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman has arrived in Algeria for a significant two-day state visit. This marks the first such high-level contact between the two nations in over 52 years. He was warmly received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers.

The leaders are set to discuss strengthening their bilateral relations. They will also address pressing regional and international issues of mutual concern. The last Omani leader to visit Algeria was Sultan Qaboos bin Said in 1973.

President Tebboune’s visit to Oman in October 2024 paved the way for this renewed engagement. That trip was the first by an Algerian president to Oman in 34 years. During their meeting, both leaders emphasized their deep-rooted ties.

They expressed a strong commitment to expanding cooperation across various sectors. Recent years have witnessed a clear revitalization of Algerian-Omani relations. This momentum is driven by the shared desire of both leaders to foster collaboration.

Discussions during this visit will focus on boosting cooperation further. They will also exchange perspectives on global and regional matters, notably the Palestinian issue. Tebboune’s prior visit to Oman facilitated the creation of a joint investment fund.

This fund is anticipated to stimulate economic growth for both nations. Their previous meeting also resulted in several memoranda of understanding. These agreements spanned investment, education, environment, finance, employment, and media.

Oman’s Royal Court stated the visit aims to explore all avenues of cooperation. The goal is to achieve shared objectives and enhance Arab unity. They also intend to address current regional and global developments together.
