An Egyptian appeals court on Monday upheld a one-year prison sentence for opposition politician Ahmad al-Tantawi and arrested him immediately following the ruling, according to lawyer Nabeh Elganadi speaking to AFP.
Tantawi, a former lawmaker, had hoped to challenge President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in the 2023 elections.
However, in February, he was convicted of election campaign irregularities.
Elganadi further stated that the court also upheld one-year sentences for 21 members of Tantawi’s campaign team.
The specific details of the alleged irregularities remain unclear.
