Tanzania president appoints daughter and son in law to cabinet

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has named her daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, as deputy minister for education and appointed Wanu’s husband, Mohamed Mchengerwa, as the country’s new health minister.

Hafidh Ameir, 43, is the MP for Makunduchi in Zanzibar. She retained her seat in the 29 October 2025 general election under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi ticket, which also backed her mother’s successful re-election.

Mchengerwa, 46, is the MP for Rufiji Constituency in Pwani Region. His appointment adds to a string of high profile changes in the new cabinet.

President Suluhu Hassan also appointed former president Jakaya Kikwete’s son, Ridhwani Kikwete, as a minister in her office. He will oversee public service management and good governance. Ridhwani Kikwete, 46, is the CCM MP for Chalinze.

The president, who won re-election with nearly 98 percent of the vote, unveiled a cabinet of 27 ministers and 29 deputy ministers.
Seven senior officials from the previous government were removed, including former energy minister Doto Biteko, former agriculture minister Hussein Bashe and former trade minister Seleman Jafo.

In the reshuffled cabinet, Khamis Musa Omar becomes finance minister, while Mahmoud Thabit Kombo stays on as foreign minister.
Prof Riziki Shemdoe is appointed education minister, with Hafidh Ameir serving as his deputy.
Daniel Chongolo will lead the agriculture ministry and Judith Kapinga will take charge of industry and trade.
