Two Nigerian police officers were killed, and three left unconscious following an attack by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in Abuja.
The assailants reportedly used knives and explosives during the assault on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh stated that the proscribed group attacked a police checkpoint without provocation, wielding machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices.
The incident occurred in the capital city.
During the assault, police vans were also set on fire by the attackers, further escalating the situation.
The police issued a statement detailing the extent of the damage and casualties.
The Shi’ite Islamic Movement of Nigeria was banned in 2019 after violent protests demanding the release of their jailed leader, resulting in the group’s activities being declared illegal by Nigerian authorities.
In 2015, Nigeria’s army accused the group of plotting to assassinate a former chief of army staff, leading to a brutal crackdown.
Over 300 members were killed, and the group’s leader, El Zakzaky, was imprisoned from 2015 until 2021.
