The Independent High Authority for Elections in Tunisia announced late Saturday that it accepted three presidential candidates for the October 6 election.
Chairman Farouk Bouasker made the announcement in Tunis.
As of the August 5 deadline, the Authority had received 17 candidacy files.
The submission period began on July 29, as previously stated by the Authority.
The three candidates accepted are Zouhair Magzaoui, Secretary-General of the People’s Movement; Kais Saied, the current president; and Ayashi Zammal, President of the Azimoun Movement.
Fourteen files were rejected due to insufficient endorsements or failure to meet legal requirements.
Bouasker noted these deficiencies as the reason for the rejections.
The National Salvation Front, the main opposition coalition, announced in April it would not participate, citing a “lack of competitive conditions.”
Authorities maintain that the elections will be fair and transparent.
