Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi lauded the “fast” progression of US partnership under the Trump administration, eyeing a mineral deal akin to Ukraine’s.
Tshisekedi emphasized the US’s global influence, noting to Fox News that “things are moving a lot faster on both sides.”
This follows a meeting with Trump’s special envoy, Congressman Ronny Jackson, to address eastern Congo’s security.
Congo seeks US support against rebel groups, particularly the M23, in exchange for access to its rich mineral reserves.
The M23 has recently captured key towns, exacerbating instability in the mineral-rich east.
Tshisekedi stressed the desire to not only extract but also process minerals, creating jobs and fostering stability.
He expressed a longing for increased US involvement, contrasting it with China’s growing presence.
“It’s not that China is waxing in Africa. It’s more that America is waning in Africa,” he stated.
Tshisekedi believes a US partnership would spur innovation and allow Congo to bolster its defense capabilities.
He also requested US pressure and sanctions against armed groups, while offering assurance of safety for American companies.
The M23’s continued advances have displaced thousands, with Congo accusing Rwanda of backing the rebels.
