Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi will join a high-level summit of Eastern and Southern African leaders in Tanzania on February 7-8 to address the escalating conflict in eastern Congo, his spokesperson announced Thursday.
The summit comes as M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, seized another mining town in South Kivu province on Wednesday, pushing southward toward Bukavu in defiance of their recently declared unilateral ceasefire.
Presidential spokesperson Tina Salama confirmed Tshisekedi’s participation but did not specify whether he would travel to Dar es Salaam or join the meeting remotely.
Rwanda’s Foreign Minister stated earlier this week that President Paul Kagame is also expected to take part in the discussions.
