Tunisian Ennahdha leader sentenced 3 years for party funding

Rached Ghannouchi, leader of Tunisia’s opposition party Ennahdha, received a new three-year prison term for illegal party financing, adding to his existing 15-month sentence for terrorism-related charges.

His son-in-law, Rafik Abdessalam, also received a three-year sentence in absentia.

The court ordered Ennahdha to pay a $1.17 million fine. Ghannouchi, aged 82, was arrested in April 2023 for inciting violence and plotting against state security.

He had previously been convicted of terrorism charges in May, with his sentence extended to 15 months on appeal in October.

Ghannouchi’s imprisonment follows comments during a funeral in 2022 that led to charges of disparaging police officers.

As a key opposition figure, his arrest is part of a broader crackdown on dissent following President Kais Saied’s power-grab in July 2021, affecting various opposition figures, including politicians and businessmen.
