According to Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc, Somalia’s president’s son is anticipated to return to Turkey soon to partake in a court proceeding concerning a fatal car accident involving his use of a diplomatic vehicle.
Mohamed Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud was operating a Somali consulate car on November 30 when it collided with a motorcycle courier in central Istanbul, resulting in severe injuries to the courier.
Mahmoud left Turkey on December 2 following police interrogation. Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued for him after the courier succumbed to injuries in the hospital on December 6.
Tunc, addressing reporters in Ankara, conveyed that he had discussions regarding the incident with his Somali counterpart and noted that Somali authorities were approaching the matter with goodwill.
“We engaged in discussions with the Somali judicial authorities. The defendant is expected to arrive in Turkey in the forthcoming days, and the trial proceedings will commence,” Tunc stated, expressing hope that the trial would commence promptly.
A Turkish official informed media this week that Ankara, maintaining positive relations with Somalia, had sought information from Somali authorities regarding the incident and the utilization of a diplomatic vehicle.
As of now, Somali officials have refrained from issuing comments on the matter.
