Two boats capsize, 22 Somalis perish

ragedy struck off Madagascar’s coast as two boats carrying Somali migrants capsized, claiming 22 lives, officials confirmed.

The vessels, transporting 70 passengers, included women among the travelers. Somali Ambassador to Ethiopia Abdullahi Warfa shared details on Saturday, speaking to Radio Mogadishu.

While the exact date of the incident remains undisclosed, Warfa confirmed that fishermen rescued 48 survivors who received medical care.

“The victims’ identities are documented, and we’ll release their names through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Warfa stated.

The cause of the capsizing is under investigation. Authorities have provided no further details about the accident’s circumstances.

The Indian Ocean continues to witness a rise in migrant tragedies. Earlier this month, 24 lives were lost in a similar incident near the Comoros Islands.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed that traffickers deliberately capsized the vessel, with women and children among the victims.

In September, a boat departing the Comoros Islands vanished, leaving 12 passengers unaccounted for, including children and an expectant mother.

August saw another somber tale as eight migrants, including a 12-year-old boy, perished in similar waters.
