At least three people were killed, and several others wounded, in a collision between two passenger trains in Zagazig city, northeast of Cairo, according to Egypt’s health ministry on Saturday.
Five of the injured are reported to be in critical condition, the ministry stated.
The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, and rescue operations are still ongoing.
The railway authority confirmed that one of the trains was traveling from Zagazig to Ismailia, while the other was heading from Mansoura to Zagazig.
Egypt has been working on modernizing its ageing transportation network in recent years.
The country has undertaken efforts to upgrade trains and railway lines to prevent such incidents.
The cause of the collision is yet to be determined, as authorities continue their investigation.
